ABSTRACT:
Intravenous infusion is a direct administration of medication or fluid directly into human circulation, helps to restore the fluid and electrolyte balance. Same time it is a very complicated route, which causes consequences if asepsis is not maintained. The main aim of the study was to explore the Practice of Staff Nurses regarding IV infusion in selected hospital at Mysuru. Practice of IV infusion was assessed among 50 Staff Nurses. Purposive sampling technique was adopted to select the 50 Staff Nurses. Data was collected by using practice check list. The result of the study revealed that all Staff Nurses (100%) has good Practice regarding IV infusion. Study finding stresses the responsibility of health Professionals in improving the practice of Staff Nurses regarding IV infusion, which helps to reduce Complications.

INTRODUCTION:
Health is a dynamic and evolving concept that is basic to nursing1. Nurses are the essential part of health team member they will protect, promote, optimize and prevent the health from disease and also she will take care the patient in clinical setting and she provides comprehensive physical, mental, social and also spiritual, intellectual care in the aspect of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological aspect. In Pharmacological she treats the patient using drugs. Nurses are using many routes like enteral, parenteral, and topical routes among these parenteral route is commonly used it include Intramuscular, Intravenous, Subcutaneous and Intradermal, because these routes are rapid in action and prolong duration. In that Intravenous route is one which act rapidly because drugs are directly introducing into the human circulation. Hence it helps in the emergency condition and restoring the fluid and electrolytes and maintaining acid base balance.
At same time it is a very complicated route which will take a life of a person if asepsis is not maintained1.“Prevention is better than cure”, so to prevent these complications, there is a need for developing a IV infusion protocol.
NEED FOR THE STUDY:
In current scenario health care delivery system is dynamic and growing globally2. A quality assurance is more important in health care practice. According to double blind peer reviewed articles intravenous therapy is one of the most common route for administering medication fluid, blood directly into the human circulation .Greater attention to intravenous therapy is needed in nursing education and it should be prioritized in continuing professional development, in order to avoid the error that can lead to serious complication which may be life threatening like phlebitis, circulation overload, air embolism, infection etc. Which are negatively affecting the life of the client NICE Recommended that training should be developed and made available to all health professionals regarding prescribing, administering and monitoring of IV therapy. The well-developed guidelines play an important role in reducing minor to major complications that may cost life, there are
1) Proper site selection
2) Preparation of site
3) Maintaining asepsis
4) Adjustment of height
5) Assessment of patient
These guidelines does not require any expensive device to follow, it need only a proper practice by health personal3.
During the clinical experiences it has been observed that the nurses are not practicing the guideline while administering IV infusion, which are taught during their training period .Hence the researcher are interested to assess the practice of staff nurse and also to develop a protocol which can act as a guideline for staff nurses which enhance a quality care to the client.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
“A study to explore the practice regarding Intravenous Infusion (IV) among staff nurses with the view of developing a protocol on IV infusion at selected hospital in Mysuru”.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
1. To assess the level of practice of staff nurses regarding IV infusion.
2. To develop a protocol on IV infusion.
METHODOLOGY:
As the aim of the study is to explore the practice of IV infusion among staff nurses at J.S.S. Hospital, Mysuru. An “Explorative Research approach was adopted for the study”.
VARIABLES OF THE STUDY:
Research variables - practice of staff nurses on IV infusion.
Personal variables – personal variables of staff nurses viz,. Age, Gender, ward, total year of experience, previous knowledge about IV infusion.
SETTING OF THE STUDY:
The study setting of present study is J.S.S. Hospital in Mysuru.
POPULATION:
In the present study population comprises of staff nurses those who are working in critical care area, emergency ward, post caesarian ward and post-operative ward.
SAMPLE AND SAMPLING:
In present study sample size is fifty (50) staff nurses.
SAMPLING CRITERIA:
Inclusion criteria:
· Staff nurses who are available during data collection.
· Staff nurses who are willing to participate in the study.
· Staff nurses those who are working in critical care area, emergency ward, post-operative ward and post caesarian ward.
Exclusion criteria:
· Ward in charges and supervisors.
Data collection technique and instrument:
Selection and development of data collection tool:
Based on Review of Literature the following tools are developed by the researcher tools for data collection consist of two section.
Section- A :Proforma for selected personal variables.
Section-B : Observational check list to assess practice of IV infusion therapy.
The proforma for selected personal variables, observational check list, and protocol were content validated by three experts from various departments such as midwifery and obstetrics, psychiatry and medical surgical nursing. For selected personal variables there was 100% agreement between subject experts for all the items. One item was modified and refined as per the suggestions of subject exports and the final tool was projected. For observational check list there was 100% agreement between all subject experts for all 52 items.
The Reliability was established through Inter-rater method, 30 samples were selected and the calculated r was 0.82, hence the tool was found reliable. Pilot study was conducted and it was found feasible. Data was collected for a period of 2 weeks from 2-04-2015 to 11-04-2015 using purposive sampling technique and 50 staff nurses were selected for the study.
First details of personal variables were obtained from staff nurses, and the observation of practice regarding IV infusion has taken 5 minutes for each staff nurses. Data collection was finished after thanking each respondent for the participating in the study.
RESULTS:
Findings related to selected personal variables of staff nurses:
The findings of the present study shows that majority (54%) of the staff nurses were in the age group of 20-30 years. majority (80%) are females. Totally 70% of the staff nurses’ educational preparation’s GNM. The findings also showed that 68% are having experience between 1-10 years. Most (40%) of the all staffs are working in the Critical care area. It also revealed that 80% of staff nurses were not having previous exposure to any educational programme regarding IV infusion.

CONCLUSION:
The present study focused to explore the practice regarding IV infusion among staff nurses with the view of developing a protocol regarding IV infusion at selected hospital in Mysuru.
Data was collected from 50 staff nurses collected data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and presented in the form of tables and graphs. Analysis of findings revealed that all the staff nurses had good practice in IV infusion.
The study findings stress the responsibility of health professionals in implementing various strategies to improve the practice of staff nurses regarding IV infusion which in turn help to reduce certain complications.
